Piravi Marundeeswarar Temple: A Must-Visit for Ashwini Nakshatra People

Piravi Marundeeswarar temple in Thiruthuraipoondi, Tiruvarur district, is a temple that is believed to be favorable for people born under Ashwini nakshatra. The presiding deity is Marundeeswarar or Shiva. Shiva is also called Gajasamharamoorthy here. He removes fear from the minds of his devotees and destroys pride and arrogance in both men and women.

Ashwini nakshatra people are generally very intelligent and sociable. They are fond of music and the arts. Speed defines them, for they think and act fast unless there is some affliction. They make good healers for the Ashwini Kumaras, who represent this nakshatra are divine physicians. But they are often impulsive, headstrong, and aggressive. Ashwini nakshatra people who have doshas or adverse planetary effects in their horoscope visit this temple seeking relief. Others who come here seek a good marriage, progeny, and a sound education. The deity here, Piravi Marundeeswarar, is believed to free people from the cycle of birth and death, thereby granting them salvation or moksha. Ashwini Nakshatra people tend to have good immunity against illness, as they have the healing energy of the Ashwini Kumaras within them. They will be able to sustain it by visiting this temple and performing Homas for Dhanvantari and Saniswara. They could also worship Mars (Kuja or Angaraka).

There is an interesting legend about the deity who is also called Gajasamharamoorthy. Long ago, some sages living in Tharukavana became arrogant believing that Shiva owed his power to the yagnas that they performed. To cure them of their arrogance, Shiva appeared before them as a young and handsome beggar. The wives of the sages were smitten by him and followed him. Meanwhile, Vishnu appeared before the sages as a beautiful woman. The sages went after ‘her’ just as their wives ran after Shiva.

When they realized that the gods had fooled them, the sages became furious. They wanted revenge, and so they created a ferocious elephant by performing a yagna. But Shiva killed it and used its skin to clothe his body. For this reason, he came to be known as Gajasamharamoorthy. The sages were humbled and surrendered before Shiva.

Another legend talks about a demoness called Jallika, who was a devotee of Shiva. Though she was a demoness, she was not evil. However, her husband, Virupakshan, was very wicked. One day, he killed and ate a young Brahmin boy who was on his way to perform Shraddha for his dead parents. He did this despite his wife’s pleas that it was a sin to do such an evil deed and that he would be killed for it. As she predicted, he died soon after he ate the boy. Jallika then went to Tiruthuraipoondi and begged Shiva to bring her husband back to life. She also requested him to create only noble souls and not demons. Goddess Periyanayaki, Shiva’s consort, appeared before her and restored both the Brahmin boy and the demon to life. The boy asked her why she saved his life, and she replied that she would bestow her blessings on those who dutifully performed Shraddha for their ancestors and also grant salvation to those dead souls. To Jallika, she assured that she would not take the life of a man, however wicked he was, if his wife prayed to her.
